PROSE Project Proposal
Project
People from all over the world each day go through the
airport. Each country has food where it originated from or is popular from. Food
from all across the world on a dinner table can create a sense of unity. As
people enter the airport they can sit on the seats and learn about the
different food people eat around the world. The sculpture will be entertaining
and interactive.
The sculpture must be the size a regular dinner table and
be able to withstand the weight of people sitting on the interactive parts of
the sculpture.
Research
There
are many artists who have sculpted food, usually being fruits or vegetables as
shown in images 1 and 3. Tables have also been sculpted (Image 3) but many
artists do not add meals onto the table. Most sculptures are simple with few
objects on the table and no chairs next to them. Bronze seems to be the most
common material. Only image 1 had color while the rest of the sculptures were
kept uncolored.
Each
of the 4 sculptures are effective when thinking about what they depict. Image
1, 3, and 4 are clearly food. Even without color used for the sculptures of
images 3 and 4, it is noticeable that they are fruits and donuts respectively.
Image 2 shows a sculpture of a table with what seem to not be food. Each
sculpture effectively depicts the object clearly. However, if these same
objects were to be used for this project, it would not effectively portray the
different countries around the world. To be able to effectively have various
countries represented, there needs to be food and meals from different
countries. Images 5 through 12 are meals and pastries from different continents
and countries. There is cuisine from every continent besides Antarctica. These
meals should be more effective when trying to represent people from around the
world since they are meals that are not as commonly known compared to the
fruits from the previous sculptures. The table sculpture from image 2 design
would not be effective when trying to create a welcoming atmosphere. The table
may effectively represent a table, but its design is not one common to the
design of dinner tables in many homes.
My
sculpture will differ in the sense that it will have more complex objects. The
table will be more focused on being decorative. Out of the sculptures included,
not of them were truly interactive. Chairs will be added to my sculpture to
allow people to interact with the sculpture.

Objective
At
an airport many people from around the world come together in one area. People
may speak a different language and be a long distance away from home. Not being
able to communicate or not seeing anything familiar can create a distance
between people. The project serves to create a sense of unity. Even if people
are from the United States but are new to Colorado, the sculpture can be used
as a welcoming symbol. Since the sculpture will allow people to sit as if they
are eating at the table, people can use the opportunity to take pictures and
create memories in a new place.

·
Access to studios and workshop
To determine effectiveness,
we will look at the engagement received by the sculpture.
Do people acknowledge the
sculpture?
Do people interact with
the sculpture?
Do people read the information
on the sculpture?
Does the sculpture
withstand the weight of people?
If people interact with
the sculpture and read the information on it, then it would be effective. If
instead people do not acknowledge the sculpture, then it is not effective.

Hi Diana!
ReplyDeleteFood is a common ground that brings people together, and your idea of installing a sculpture in an airport to welcome guests is a great idea. You are right when you say that food is a universal language. You did a really thorough job of exploring materials and strategizing. One thing I really loved about your project was the effectiveness test. I wish I had incorporated something like this into my project. The other thing that caught my attention was that you didn't worry about cost, but wrote down need. I think this would have helped me a great deal because I got too wrapped up in researching cost.
The only concern I would have would be how much time people spend at the airport. On one hand, it will be great for those who get stuck in long layovers. On the other hand, people are usually rushing through the airport. It could go either way here. I think it would be refreshing to be able to check out some art while I'm waiting to change planes.
I like your project idea! Food is a universal desire and I like big sculptures of small things those are fun. I would've liked to see a cost breakdown of your PROSE. Also, it would've been cool to specify which sculptors you would've brought in for this project. Nice job!
ReplyDeleteI loved the diversity within your project. It is a great way for people to come out of their comfort zone. If this were to be built in our airport I would definitely want to visit it. Great job.
